abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected many industries, which have suffered a sharp decline in demand. However, this pandemic also appears to be an indicator of economic and social phenomena with long-standing roots. This is the case for movie theaters as part of the entertainment industry. They are going through a deep crisis, particularly in France, with a lasting drop in attendance. The viewpoint proposes a reading of the crisis in reference to the one experienced by the hypermarket retail format, attacked by the Internet and convenience stores, which symbolize a precision commerce. The proposed parallel highlights the emergence of a precision cinema through streaming platforms, to which movie theaters must respond by initiating experiential and immersive approaches.
